Dedication
Dedicated
to the memory of my Grandma Mary Alice Householder Elliott and my Grandpa
John Mack Garloch--my links to the past.
Introduction
This is the
history of the ancestors and descendants of my father, Emery
Theodore GARLOCK, and my mother, Doris
Irene ELLIOTT, but it also covers their extended families and
the places they lived.
Their forefathers
and foremothers came to the Ohio Valley as soon as the Northwest Territory
opened up for settlement. Most of them had been in this country for
many years, settling the previous frontiers of Maryland, Pennsylvania,
Virginia and New Jersey. Some fought for independence during the Revolutionary
War; some fought to open the Ohio frontier; all of them had fought daily
for their existence in a new land. They were of sturdy stock and apparently
had an itchy foot and sense of adventure. Some of them kept moving on,
migrating to Indiana and Kansas as the western frontier moved further
west.
Many of their
stories remain untold but the search goes on. Hopefully publishing on
this site what has been discovered so far will bring forth more of the
story. More
will be added, so please keep checking this site. I have discovered
a lot from old records and documents; collected stories from family
members, friends and neighbors; and searched the Internet. If you have
any bits or pieces to add, please do so. The story comes together little
by little and no piece is too small. This site offers many opportunities
to share electronically. Please feel free to use mail or phone if you
are more comfortable with that.
I love to talk about family history!
I have tried to
get permission for posted material, where possible. If you find any
personal information about you on this site that you would prefer to
have removed, please contact
me and I will be glad to delete it.
Welcome to
other researchers
While this is
primarily a family history site, there is also a lot of material here
of general interest. If you are researching the area, or are interested
in its history, you might well find something here. I have not had a
chance to document all the research that has been contributed but researchers
are identified and sources are given where known.
